Bridging the Gap between Animal Shelters and Human Services
Making A Difference
Service Dog Training / Placement Program
Meet Karen & Reggie
Program Graduates

Karen & Reggie / Program Graduates
Your donation to the SPCA Service Dog program will ensure that a disabled person who can benefit from the services a dog can perform for them, can recieve a needed dog. We cater to folks who otherwise would never be able to afford the extreme high cost charged by nationwide, large Service Dog organizations. Even though these places say their dogs are free, each person ends up paying many times over $20,000 in donations to get their own dogs. That will never happen here. We guarantee it.
DOUBLE YOUR GIFT!
Donating to this program saves lives! A dog who has been thrown away as if it were trash, and a person who cannot even leave their home to go shopping, or out to dinner with a friend. Both lives are changed forever as they are teamed to gether in a lifelong relationship of respect and love. This gift is yours to give!

Beth Levine / Training Director:The Gift of Life is One You Can Make - By Making a Donation to the SPCA, You Know You Are Helping to Work For A Better Community
Quest for the Gold
Beth completed the Toronto, Canada competition coming in 3rd (Bronze Medal).
Unfortunately, this only gave her 54 points for the 60 points required to make the
Paralympics team for London, England and the 2012 Olympics competition.

Beth Levine in Dressage Competition
Beth Levine rides in a formal Dressage Points Competition

In the photo above, Beth Levine, our Training Director, competes in a points competition on a borrowed horse. Even though she qualified in the top 10 riders in the United States, she narrowly missed qualifying for both, the 2008 Paralympics held in Beijing, China, and the 2012 Paralympics to be held in London, England. Now, with the help of Prince Hopeful (or Pappi as he is called affectionately) the horse donated to Beth and the SPCA by Braeburn Farm & The Hopeful Group LLC in North Carolina, we hope to see her achieve her dream.

Beth says, "I have ridden many borrowed horses in competition. Pappi is truly the best I've ever been on. (And He's OURS!) I am so pleased to finally have a horse that will not be taken away from me at the last minute, or that I only have a short time to work with before a competition. This is so exciting! I really believe that with Pappi, we have a real chance to go to the Paralympics and very possibly win. He really is exceptional. If we get there and we don't win, it won't be the horse's fault this time."

Pappi is a registered Hanovarian gelding, 17 hands high and 8 years old. He is trained in Dressage and has competed in a couple of lesser competitions already. He was injured during a training exercise and thought (by the cooperative that owned him) to be done in his career, This, then, was the reason he was donated to us. Beth was positive the injury wasn't as bad as had been thought, and he was very quickly checked by our local veterinarian who then assured us that it was only a pulled hip muscle and not a ripped tendon as was previously believed. Pappi has for the most part, already healed and Beth is working with him now to strengthen the muscles in the hip that was injured. She reports on his progress daily and says that he is indeed stronger everyday and is totally confident that he will again compete beautifully and with with no problems at all.
Pappi is currently stabled at the Double S Oaks Ranch on Hwy 5 in Midway.
We invite you to meet Pappi and visit with Beth. Please call the shelter office to set up an appointment.
Beth will be happy to meet you there any day of the week and anytime during daylight hours.

Beth starts with Pappi in a stall

This is the perfect time for them to
begin to learn each other

A bond between horse and rider
is being formed

Time to saddle up. First the blanket

Then the saddle.
This horse doesn't even notice

And on to the arena to
warm up before working out

Lining Pappi up on the mounting stairs.
Pappi stands 5'9" at the withers

That's 17.1 hands in horse talk.
Too Tall for beth just to climb on.

Good timing, the farrier was
there today too.

Beth and Pappi waiting their turn

Then it's Ward's turn to trim Pappi's nails

This is done every 6 weeks

Check back... We'll have more photos of Pappi and Beth here soon along with progress reports and dates of when and where you can meet them in person as Beth and Pappi will begin to perform Dressage demonstrations throughout the area. If you can possibly help with transporting Pappi to and from these events, please contact us at the shelter. Both an oversized horse trailer (tall) and a way to haul it are needed at the moment.
(Please do not get upset if Beth requires a better trailer than what you may have. Not only is Pappi valued at $85,000, Beth is in love... Hehe)
