The SPCA's Stepping Up Program
Through this unique program, people who are in a bad situation and find themsleves homeless can get back on their feet. The program gives them an education in the animal welfare sector but also gives them skills they can use in any job or career they may choose.

Class: #1 - How to meet and greet a strange dog & Caring for your pet:
Instructors: Charlie Campbell, Past-President & Founder SPCA,
Beth Levine, SPCA Training Director

Animals:Chaka (dog), Lucy (dog), Truman (dog), & Patches (cat)
Class Length: 1 - 1 ½ hours
Designed for ages: 1st thru 4th grades

1 Introduction: Introduce the dogs and staff members. Tell how old they are and what breeds.
2 Talk about the differences between pet dogs and working dogs:
  (Special Dogs)
  - what is a pet dog? (Companion Dog)
  - what is a working dog?
3 What are the basic needs for owning a dog?
  - fenced area
  - good food
  - fresh water
  - playtime
  - training
  - lots of love
4 The importance of maintaining basic health needs:
  - vaccinations
  - yearly check-ups
  - Spaying / Neutering
5 The importance of maintaining current ID for your pets:
  - ID tags
  - Microchips
  - Tattoos
6 Taking your dog in the car
7 A good dog is one that is trained to:
  - sit,
  - lay down,
  - stay,
  - heel and,
  - come when called
  - housebroken
8 How can you train your dog? (Natural Ability - Tricks - Obedience)
  - the importance of Positive Reinforcement
  - how to properly correct your dog
  - using "Hand Commands"
9 When to start training
  - 6 weeks ("No" "Come" "Housebreaking")
  - 10 - 12 weeks ("Sit" "Down" "Off")
  - 12 - 14 weeks ("Stay" "Heel" "Tricks")
10 How to train a service dog (one simple task "pick-em ups" will be demonstrated)
  - how to teach pick-em ups
  - how to teach let me have it
  - how to teach point to it
11 Talk about different breeds of dogs and their uses
  - watch/guard dogs - Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds
  - hunting dogs - Labradors, Bird dogs, Hounds
  - companion dogs - Pomeranians, Pekinese, Chihuahuas
  - mixed breed dogs - more healthy, smarter, live longer
12 Where can dogs go? - parks, lakes
13 Where can dogs NOT go? - stores, restaurants, libraries, theatres, post offices
14 How to greet strange dogs
15 Show our dogs, Chaka first then Lucy. When showing Lucy, explain how she was trained.
16 Meet & Greet - Let the kids get hands on with the dogs
17 Review - ask the kids questions:
  - what is the difference between a pet dog and a working dog?
  - name some things you should have if you own a dog
  - when should you take your dog in the car?
  - name a place where you might take your dog
18 Pass out handouts, talk about upcoming shelter events and Obedience classes, and the Dog Club
