Companion Animals Program

Our own Companion Animals Program assists Elderly and disabled people in Assisted Living Housing to be able to keep their loved companion pets by their side instead of being surrendered to an animal shelter and placed with a new family and new home.

Class: #2 - What is animal abuse? (How to recognize it and what to do):
Instructors: Charlie Campbell, Past-President & Founder SPCA,

Class Length: 1 hour
Designed for ages: 5th & 6th grades

1 Introduction: Introduce the dogs and staff members. Tell how old they are and what breeds.
2 Talk about the differences between pets and other animals that are owned by people:
  - dogs
  - cats
  - birds
  - horses
  - cows
  - goats
  - others
3 What are the basic needs for owning a pet?
  - fenced area
  - good food
  - fresh water
  - playtime
  - training
  - lots of love
4 name different types of abuse
  - physical (hitting, kicking, no food, no water, no shelter, etc)
5 Where do we see abuse?
6 What makes people abuse their pets?
7 How can we spot abuse?
8 Who should we tell?
9 Getting someone who is abusive to their pet to give it up voluntarily
10 Meet & Greet - Let the kids get hands on with the dogs
11 Review - ask the kids questions:
  - what is the difference between a pet dog and a working dog?
  - name some things you should have if you own a dog
  - when should you take your dog in the car?
  - name a place where you might take your dog
12 Pass out handouts, talk about upcoming shelter events and Obedience classes, and the Dog Club
