Disaster can strike anywhere, in many forms, and always without notice. Our Emergency Pets Services provides for you during times of personal crisis. Your Donation to the EPS program can make sure that when disaster strikes, we are prepared to assist in any area we are needed. Our Award Winning Disaster Resposnse Team offers assistance to pet owners as well as other organizations all across the state of Arkansas within 8 hours. We've been there for single families and entire communities.

SPCA Young People's Education Class Plan:
Class: #3 - Working Dogs (How are they different? Why are they needed?):
Instructors: Charlie Campbell, Past-President & Founder SPCA,
Beth Levine, SPCA Training Director

Josh Cunha, General Manager
Animals:Chaka (dog), Lucy (dog), Truman (dog), & Patches (cat)
Class Length: 1 - 1 ½ hours
Designed for ages: 1st thru 6th grades

1 Introduction: Introduce the dogs and staff members. Tell how old they are and a quick how far along in the service dog process each dog is.
2 Talk about the differences between pet dogs and working dogs:
  (Special Dogs)
  - what is a pet dog? (Companion Dog)
  - what is a trick dog? (Working Dog)
  - what is a watch dog? (make noise, alert owners) (Working Dog)
  - what is a guard dog? (attack) (Working Dog)
  - what is a police dog? (attack, bombs, drugs) (Working Dog)
  - what is a search & rescue dog? (find people, alert rescuers) (Working Dog)
  - what is a therapy dog? (give happiness to people) (Companion Dog)
  - what is a service (assistance) dog? (do things for disabled people) (Working Dog)
  - what are seeing-eye/guide dogs? (help a blind person be mobile) (Working Dog)
3 Who needs a service dog?
  - physical disability
  - mental disability
  - medical alert
4 Service Dogs may be trained to:
  - retrieve things that drop,
  - portable telephones, or items from shelves and other hard-to-reach places;
  - open refrigerator and other doors;
  - push elevator buttons;
  - turn light switches on and off;
  - carry items in their mouths or backpacks;
  - pull wheelchairs up ramps or short distances;
  - go get help should their partner need human assistance.
  - provide a sense of security (intimidating breeds)
  The only type of dog we are not qualified to train are seeing-eye/guide dogs.

6 Where can service dogs go?
  - (it is absolutely necessary that a service dog be with its owner 24/7).
7 What breeds of dogs can be service dogs?
8 How old does a dog have to be to be trained to be a special dog?
9 Show our dogs, Chaka first then Lucy. When showing Lucy, explain how she was trained.
  - training as: natural ability - tricks - obedience
10 How to behave around service dogs
  - stand quietly
  - ask to pet the dog
  - move slowly, do not hit or yell
  - pet gently
11 Meet & Greet - Let the kids get hands on with the dogs
12 Review - ask the kids questions:
  - what is the difference between a guard dog and a service dog?
  - who can own a service dog?
  - name a place where you might see a service dog.
  - name something a service might do for a disabled person.
  - name a working dog
  - name a companion dog
13 Pass out handouts, talk about upcoming shelter events and Obedience classes, and the Dog Club
