Lucy : Mobility / Physical assistance, Flippin, Arkansas

This very special dog knew from the very beginning she was destined to be the love of Charlie's life. Pictured here with her best friend, Charlie, and the SPCA mascot, Truman, Lucy began her training to become a Service Dog at only 6 weeks old. By just 3 months, she was actively working with Charlie in public access areas as well as assisting in elementary school classrooms to teach young children what Service Dogs do for their disabled human partners. Lucy has grown to be so much more than a single person's assistant as she also happily works for Charlie's girlfriend, Jenny, too. She spends much of her day going back and forth between them just seeing if they need her for anything at the moment. At only 8 months, Lucy, working as a fully functioning Service Dog, now also assists the SPCA Service Dog trainers in teaching new puppies and dogs what it is they are supposed to do too. The SPCA salutes this dog for being exceptional in her field.
Reggie : Mobility / Psychiatric assistance, West Plains, Missouri
This super Golden Retriever was chosen for the SPCA Service Dog program after being surrendered to the SPCA by a previous owner for being "too hyper". Reggie lived up to his reputation throughout his training but his trainers refused to give up on him. The relationship between him and his new human partner, Karen, was love at first site and although he still maintains his happy-go-lucky aura, Reggie understood at once he would need to calm down to help his new best friend get through her difficult days. During one instance, Karen, in a wheelchair, had gotten stuck in a doorway. Reggie wanted through too, and decided on his own the she needed a push. Ducking his head below the seat from behind and bracing his shoulders, he found that he could indeed push her chair. Now, with just a little encouragement, this has become one of Reggie's primary duties for his disabled human partner and one she has quickly grown to rely on. Proof that if given the opportunity, a dog can reason and problem solve when they see a reason for doing so. Apparently Reggie's love for Karen was reason enough. The SPCA salutes this dog for being exceptional in his field.
